The Improvised Shakespeare Company® creates a brand new, fully improvised Shakespearean masterpiece right before your eyes. Nothing has been planned out, rehearsed, or written. All of the dialogue is said for the first time, the characters are created as you watch, and if you're ever wondering where the story is going...so are they! The electric passenger train is open daily from 9am–1pm on weekdays and 9am–4pm on weekends unless otherwise noted on our home page. Passenger train tickets are limited.

Make a beautiful decorative wreath for your holiday season using natural materials, including botanicals gathered in the gardens. Led by expert floral artist Whit McClure.
Green materials, wreath forms, and wire are included, but we recommend that you bring your own gloves.
About the Instructor: Whit McClure is the creative mind & muscle behind W H I T H A Z E N, a creative floral design studio focused on creating artful & unique floral designs in Los Angeles, California. Whit has developed a style that is whimsical, dynamic, and seasonally-inspired.

Descanso Gardens welcomes artists and photographers to capture our natural beauty. Please read all policies and procedures outlined below before purchasing a non-refundable permit as some policies have changed. All posed photography, both commercial and non-commercial, requires a reservation with a fee.
Reserving a One-Time-Use Photography Permit:
- Permit holders are welcome to take photographs on our grounds according to the policies and procedures outlined in the Photography Agreement.
- The garden closes promptly at 5pm, 7pm during extended hours.
- Every courtesy will be extended to those wishing to use the gardens for photography purposes so long as such use does not interfere with public use.
- Descanso Gardens cannot guarantee that all areas of the garden will be available for photography on the day of reservation. All garden activities such as classes, tours, and landscape projects will have exclusive rights to that reserved area. Some areas of the garden, including the Rose Garden, may not be available on the day of your reservation. Seasonal restrictions may also apply.
- All permit holders must check in at Guest Services to sign the Photography Agreement and to check out a Photographer badge.
- Permit holders are invited to check in at Guest Services up to two hours before the garden closes and stay as late as closing time. Check in time is 9am-3pm during regular hours and 9am-5pm during extended hours.
- Same-day photography bookings can be made on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited availability each day.
- There are limitations on equipment that amateur photographers may bring into the Gardens. Tripods are allowed, but cannot be placed in plant beds or on benches. Additional photography equipment and props are prohibited except under commercial contract through the Special Events office.
- Props such as balloons, bicycles, confetti, signage, blankets, stools, chairs/tables, plants and flowers are not permitted.
- Clothing changes are not permitted.

In this hands-on workshop, create your own soft cover book for sketching, journaling or gifting. Learn the long stitch method of sewing together a book and leave with a new handmade decorated book and an appreciation for the craft of bookbinding. All materials are provided. Open to all levels of experience.

About the Instructor: Nova Community Arts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit art studio in Los Angeles. They offer art classes, workshops, open studio access, and guest programming at their studio in Atwater Village. Nova is committed to providing arts education, access to materials and equipment, and a platform for creative expression for the community, including students, professionals, and amateurs alike. They are dedicated to serving underfunded populations in LA and providing inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities.

Learn the skills of vegetative propagation through an engaging, hands-on experience. Descanso's Nursery Horticulturist, Olivia Behegan, will guide you through the fundamentals of propagation by cuttings, including how to harvest, prepare, and propagate a variety of plants.
You'll gain practical knowledge and techniques that you can use in your own garden. You'll take home your own tray of cuttings to nurture and grow into mature plants.

Join the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM) for a nature-themed storytime featuring live music, movement activities, and playful musical exploration. This offering is part of PCM’s Musical Storytime programming. Hosted by a PCM Young Musicians teacher, each session includes a children’s book read aloud with musical accompaniment, along with an introduction to musical concepts designed for young children and their caregivers. Recommended for children ages 2–7.

Tickets must be purchased for each child attending; each ticket includes one adult admission. Additional adults must be a member or purchase a General Admission ticket.

Tai chi is an art of relaxation, focus, and balance. It emphasizes the coordination of breath and body movement to enhance energy flow, promote blood circulation, and improve body awareness. The practice helps increase flexibility and supports overall physical and mental well-being. The class will begin with qigong as a warm-up exercise, followed by step-by-step instruction for each tai chi form. This class is open to all levels.
Please note: This program takes place at the Fibonacci Spiral, a more intimate setting with slightly sloped terrain. Be prepared for a more compact practice area that offers a unique opportunity to practice tai chi amongst the oaks.
About the instructor: Kathy Chyan is a retired art professor with a B.A. in Chinese art (calligraphy, painting, and classics), an M.A. in Western art (painting and drawing), and an MFA in ceramic sculpture. Chyan has taught tai chi and art for over 30 years. She views tai chi as an art form that nurtures both mental and physical health, likening it to poetry in motion or the meditative process of painting.

Create your own living jade forest inspired by the Japanese art of Saikei. Using stone, bonsai soil and Portulacaria afra, commonly known as the jade plant, you'll learn the principles of landscape composition, balance, depth, and perspective while creating a unique living landscape to take home. Daniel Deephouse will guide participants through planting, pruning, styling, and long-term care in this beginner-friendly workshop. This workshop includes all materials and instruction.
About the Instructor: Daniel Deephouse is a lifelong bonsai practitioner and educator from Perth, Australia. He began studying bonsai at the age of eight under the guidance of his grandmother, Elizabeth Deephouse. He is currently the Assistant Curator of Bonsai at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens and teaches private, group, and corporate workshops. His work centers on using bonsai to foster presence, creativity, and connection to the natural world.
