Pacific Opera Project (POP) returns to Descanso Gardens with another magical site-specific production. Written in 1901 by Czech composer Antonin Dvořák, the Los Angeles premier of Rusalka is based on Slavic mythology and is the original inspiration for The Little Mermaid. This fairytale opera about a water nymph will be sung in English, with a new translation by Josh Shaw and Grant Preisser. Directed by Josh Shaw. Orchestra conducted by Alexandra Enyart.
With the help of an evil witch, the water nymph, Rusalka, goes against the wishes of her water goblin father, giving up her home, her family, and her voice to follow her heart and join her human prince on dry land. However, she quickly learns that true love can come at a terrible price.
