Rooted Workshop: Bonsai Trees

In these immersive, hands-on workshops, participants will be guided through the foundational techniques of bonsai while working directly with living trees. Participants will learn basic design principles, pruning, wiring, potting, and ongoing care, with an emphasis on slowing down and working with intention.

Each participant will work with their own Chinese Elm bonsai tree and leave with a finished bonsai to take home. No prior bonsai experience is necessary.

All workshops include tree, pot, soil, wire and instruction.

About the instructor: Daniel Deephouse is a lifelong bonsai practitioner and educator from Perth, Australia, who began studying bonsai at the age of eight under the guidance of his grandmother, Elizabeth Deephouse. He is currently the Assistant Curator of Bonsai at The Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens and teaches private, group, and corporate workshops. His work centers on using bonsai to foster presence, creativity, and connection to the natural world.
